Jim Furyk looks to repeat "Getting His Plaid On" at The Heritage this weekend.

For many, reaching single name status is a sign of prestige. Madonna, Tyson, Tiger, Beyonce and the Masters are all examples of the truly elite. They have reached a level of excellence where referring to their whole name is a waste of time. Unfortunately, single name status is not a sign of prestige for the Heritage. Instead, the single name signifies a struggling economy where no company is willing to pay for grown men to play a game. Granted, given the complete lack of professional sports in South Carolina, hopefully someone will save the day before the only show in town is college sports. In which case, go Gamecocks! This piece may have just received a PG-13 rating, but regardless, here’s this week’s Approach Shot for Fantasy Golf.

Tournament: The Heritage

Date: April 21st to the 24th

Location: Harbour Town Golf Links, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Defending Champion: Jim Furyk (-13)

About the course: Not a particularly long course, having a par value of 71 over 6973 yards, with only three par 5s in total. Given all the changes other courses have been undergoing to add overall length, the Harbour Town Links has instead decided not to mess with a good thing. Regularly recognized as “one of America’s top courses”, this may be the location of the oldest golf club in America. The club was formed in 1786 by a group of Scottish merchants, making this its 225th anniversary. Granted, this particular course opened in 1967, but for any history buffs, thought that was a fun little tidbit.

Golfers to watch: Matt Kuchar currently leads the PGA with six top-10 finishes in 2011. While he doesn’t do one thing better than everyone else, his overall consistency will get him the win this week. Luke Donald is an aggressive golfer as nearly half (34 of 72) of the holes he played at the Masters were either over or under par. He’s finished in the top 10 of his last two tournaments on the PGA, and with a thinner field in South Carolina, he will be in contention on Sunday. Like another young gun, Rickie Fowler also collapsed over the weekend at the Masters. We’ll go ahead and give him a pass, and given that there should be significantly less pressure at the Heritage, there’s a good chance he comes out victorious. While Jim Furyk is not putting the same kind of charge into his drives as he once did (averaging 13 yards less per drive than the tour average), the Heritage runs less than 99 yards per stroke, making it less of an issue. Given his familiarity with the course (he’s the defending champion), he has a great chance to bring home some hardware and give you a big output for Fantasy Golf this weekend. Aaron Baddeley won this event in 2006, and if he can avoid his driver, which currently only accurate 55% of the time, he can pull out a victory. Ben Crane is nearly 9% over the PGA average in both driving accuracy and greens in regulation. If he can have an above average weekend putting, he’ll have a chance. Bo Van Pelt finished 3rd here a year ago, and while he did implode this past Sunday with a 77, if he can bring back any of the Masters magic he showed at Augusta, he has a chance to perform well this weekend. Ernie Els is currently ranked 15th in the world, and while he hasn’t missed a cut all year, he hasn’t finished better than 15th all year. Probably doesn’t help that he’s averaging nearly 31 putts per round. He’s like the Philadelphia Eagles, always in the hunt, but never a real threat to win it all.
